Kanye West Explains Why His ‘White Voice’ Comes Out

By Jason Brendler

Kanye West’s big news this week is that he’s now engaged to Kim Kardashian, but he recently sat down with The JV Show on San Francisco’s Wild 94.9  radio station to discuss a few topics that have been buzzing on the internet…including the “white voice” that comes out in some situations.

Ye discussed stunts such as bringing a “White Jesus” on stage during his Yeezus tour, along with the whole concept of naming his album Yeezus to begin with–and that’s because Jesus is one of his biggest heroes. “People want to be like Mike, I want to be like Christ,” said Kanye.

However, what was perhaps most intriguing was his idea of putting on a “white voice” in certain situations. The Chicago native explained that when he gets invited to certain dinner parties he wonders, “Are they inviting you because they really want to be a part of what I’m doing or are they inviting you so they can laugh at your teeth and ask you a million questions?” referencing his bottom grill, made of all gold and diamonds.

He explained that in some of those cases, the “white voice” or job interview voice comes out, also noting that it’s not as much about race as it is about class.

Main Attrakionz x Tynethys (Mixtape Stream)

Here’s a stream of the new self-titled project from Mondre, Squadda and producer Tyneths. After the first draft of this project was lost on a harddrive crash, the trio hit the studio and recorded a whole new set of songs to replace it.

When describing the creative process, Tynethys explained it to be, “simple like the title. Drugs, a whole lotta tree, some brandy wit lemonade, some vodka, drugs, a keyboard, and a microphone … then repeat.”

Music Essentials: Portugal. The Man

Portland psychedelic rock group Portugal. The Man — Consisting of John Gourley, Zach Carothers, Kyle O’Quin, and Kane Ritchotte – recently released their eight studio efforts, Evil Friends — a genuine mix of nonchalant alt-rock and DIY punk that’s fitting for both a mosh pit and a campfire sing along. No stranger when it comes to blending compelling sounds in its repertoire, Portugal is an indie band in the most proverbial sense. Started with just Gourley and Carothers, both with no formal musical schooling, the band’s early releases saw the two friends vocally experiment over drum machines and a synth-loop — an independent start-up that shaped their sound and overall aesthetics. While the band spent a good few years away from the mainstream limelight, it was only inevitable that a major like Atlantic Records would back them eventually. This began a new escapade where Grammy wining producers Andy Wallace and the awe-inspiring Danger Mouse stepped onboard. Confidently delivering pan-genre neo-folk with ingenuousness, Portugal continue to provide social commentary, drawing from religious motifs and pop-culture topics in Gourley’s heart-felt lyrics. Here we catch up with Portugal’s frontman John Gourley who shares with us his Music Essentials. While a MacBook Pro and iPhone are basic items any touring artist can’t live without, Gourley also show us his “crew jacket,” in addition the 63 Fender Jazzmaster – an item that stands behind his livelihood.
