For Drake, the release of Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV album was the ending to a nightmare the superstar MC witnessed first hand last year when his friend and mentor was sentenced to prison on weapons charges. Drizzy along with starlet Nicki Minaj were left to hold down the YM ship while their boss was off in New York City locked down at the infamous Rikers Island.
At the time both Nicki and Drake were experiencing massive success leading up to their separate solo albums and all the while managed to prevail without Tunechi’s physical support. But to the pair, nothing was sweeter than that rainy November morning when Wayne was finally released from jail. Looking back, Drake feels proud how the YMCMB squad held things together in Wayne’s absence.
“I think for me to be part of a team and have the general, the boss, go sit it down for like eight months is always a difficult thing,” Drake told MTV News at the album release party for Weezy’s Tha Carter IV in Los Angeles on Sunday night. “That’s like a real responsibility. I’m just proud of the fact that myself and Nicki [Minaj] and the entire family were able to keep things afloat until he got out and was able to release this album.”
According to Drake, Wayne’s campaign which included a post VMA release for his ninth studio album shows the star power that Weezy truly posesses.
“He dropped his album at the VMAs like a boss” Drake continued. “That’s something an artist can only dream of, when you talk about timing, after doin’ time,” he said before turning his attention to his own work. “So I just think it’s time for us to keep focus, keep grinding. Of course, we’re gonna celebrate tonight, but tomorrow we’re back at it.”
