Something new (?) by the R&B crooner, produced by the Neptunes with Pharrell assisting on vocal duties. Definitely reminds me of earlier Neptunes production. Joe’s new LP, The Good, The Bad, The Sexy due for a Sept. 13 release. Spotted at SoulCulture.

L Boogie took to the stage at LA Rising today to perform Ready or Not (up top) and Doo Wop (down bottom). Everytime I hear anything new about Ms. Hill, I reflect back on that epic scene in Dave Chappelle’s Block Party flick. The closest we’ve gotten to a full fledged Fugees reunion? *cues up Talib’s Ms. Hill Spotted YK2.

Drizzy sure knows how to make headlines, pun intended. It’s no coincidence that Drake dropped the official first single from his sophomore album Take Care on Sunday morning, just hours before he will take the stage at his OVO Music Festival in his hometown of Toronto, Canada.
On “Headlines” Drizzy Drake goes in over a Boi-1da and Noah “40” Shebib-produced track. The opening synth lines build steadily for eight bars before the Young Money soldiers starts off spitting “I might be too strung out on compliments, overdosed on confidence/ Started not to give a f—, and stopped fearing the consequence.”
The latter may be true, amid criticisms that he was singing way too much, Drake dropped Take Care teasers like “Marvin’s Room” and “Trust Issues.” Some detractors grumbled, but the rapper confidently marched on. The previously mentioned songs were filled with self-doubt, not about his ability as an artist, but rather found Drake contemplating his life and various loves. On “Headlines” however Young Angel is self-assured. “Soap opera rappers, all these n—-s sound like ‘All My Children’/ And that’s who you thinkin’ is ’bout to come and make a killin’?/ I guess it really is just me, myself and all my millions.”
The raps are arrogant, hard in some places and sprinkled with harmonies in others. The hook is simple and seamlessly laid in between the verses. Unless you’re really paying attention it’s difficult to pinpoint where one ends and the other begins. “They know, they know, they know,” Drake breathes over and over again before rapping “That the real is on the rise/ F— dem other guys.”
When he leaked “Dreams Money Can Buy” back in May, Drake described the track as a “piece of my story,” once Take Care finally drops on October 24, it will be interesting to see where exactly “Headlines” fits i>n that story.
What do you think of Drake’s “Headlines”? Tell us in the comments!
